About the Name
The word British in our name refers to a methodology, not an affiliation.
BFFI is an independent institution based in Bucharest, Romania. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any British university, college, or awarding body.
What we are is something more specific: an institution whose pedagogical framework is built entirely on the teaching traditions of the British art school system. Our educators were formed by that system. They studied within it, were critiqued inside it, and built their practice through it. What BFFI does is carry that standard into Bucharest, intact, rigorous, and without compromise.
Our curriculum draws from the published programme structures, assessment criteria, and studio methodologies of the United Kingdom's leading fashion and creative arts universities. We have adapted those frameworks into a coherent programme designed for students who deserve access to that quality of education regardless of where they are based, and regardless of where they choose to study next.
Specifically, the British in BFFI refers to:
- The portfolio development framework, modelled on the studio-based, research-led approach taught at UK fashion programmes.
- The academic vocabulary and annotation standards expected by international admissions tutors.
- The critique format: the one-to-one and group tutorial system that is the primary mode of feedback in British art and design education.
- The research methodology, which prioritises primary investigation, cultural contextualisation, and the development of a personal design position.
- The reading lists, archival sources, and critical theory that form the intellectual foundation of a serious fashion education.
A student who trains with BFFI will be prepared to apply to fashion schools in the UK, Italy, France, or Romania, or to enter the industry, because the thinking, the portfolio, and the design process we develop are recognised everywhere.
